Frequently Asked Questions
Your Workflow-What's the best?
Your end goal is to get the project delivered; on time and on budget. You will want to use the best workflow to accomplish this. The latest technology can help. Keeping it simple with the end goal in mind is most important. Ask about the workflow before you record anything!
What final format should I deliver?
You will need to consider the project use in this decision. Your current edit facility capabilities should also be taken into account. Where will the project be seen? Web? Broadcast? DVD? Blue-Ray? All of these? A sure bet is to shoot protectively to HD . Current edit facilities will have no problem converting to any of these formats.
What about frame size?
Think of this in still photo sizes.
Common frame sizes in the USA:
SD 480 x 720 345,600 pixels up to 30 frames per second
HD 720 x 1280 1 megapixel up to 60 frames per second
HD 1080 x 1920 2 megapixels up to 30 frames per second
Green Screen-What's the best method?
First-Start with good lighting. 4:2:2 or better color space is best, but keys work well in Sony EX 4:2:0 because of the high number of pixels.
24P or 24PN? -What's up with that?
Ok. This one only applies to Panasonic P2 . This gets a little tricky but it's really simple in the end. Tape formats need to record 24 frames spread across 60 interlaced fields because of the need for constant tape speed. HDCAM, DVCPRO HD, Mini DV and others all record in this manner. Solid State memory recorders just record the frames you want. Such as 24P. These frames are called native. So that's where the N comes from. Or 24PN. There is also 30PN.
Mini DV with the Panasonic DVX/HVX Series of cameras can be recorded in many flavors. To keep it simple think of 24P as the pulldown you would get if you transferred film to videotape.
24PA or "Advanced" is how you use 24PA to get 24P , or 24 true frames to your timeline. This helps facilitate making a 24P DVD or great looking 24P to your web videos.
